  1. 1908- . Hungarian-born US physicist known as
  2. the father of the hydrogen bomb, which he
  3. worked upon, after taking part in the atom
  4. bomb project, at the Los Alamos research
  5. centre, New Mexico 1946-52. He was a key
  6. witness against his colleague, Robert
  7. Oppenheimer at the security hearings in 1954.
  8. He was widely believed to be the model for
  9. the leading character in Stanley Kubrick's
  10. 1964 film Dr Strangelove. More recently he
  11. has been one of the leading supporters of the
  12. Star Wars programme (Strategic Defense
  13. Initiative).
